Keynote Speaker

Kathryn Wahl, US Naval Research Laboratory, USA

Kathryn Wahl

DR. KATHRYN WAHL is a research materials engineer and currently heads the Surface Chemistry Branch in the Chemistry Division at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). She has worked at NRL since 1992, starting as a Post Doc after receiving a Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University. During her career at NRL, she has worked on a broad range of materials problems addressing friction, wear and adhesion. She specializes in developing a fundamental understanding of sliding processes and adhesion through creating instrumentation and experiments that probe the contacts in situ. She has applied these to solve problems in nanometer-scale slip and adhesion, solid lubrication tribology, and most recently, tribocorrosion and barnacle adhesion. These basic research efforts bring together scientists across many disciplines and subspecialties across the fields of materials science, chemistry, mechanics, and biology. She currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Tribology Letters and Tribology Transactions and is a fellow of the American Vacuum Society (AVS) and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE).
